Are our headaches from AC mold, and how urgent?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a few weeks, and now I’m noticing a few black spots on the wall behind the curtain. My husband and I have both been waking up with stuffy noses and headaches that go away after we leave for work. Could this mold be the cause of our symptoms and how urgent is it to deal with?

Yes, the symptoms you describe are consistent with exposure to mold growth from a water-damaged area. The combination of a stuffy nose, headaches, and relief when leaving the environment strongly suggests your indoor air quality is the trigger. In Dubai's climate, AC units are a primary source of condensation and hidden moisture, making them a common site for mold proliferation when a leak is present.

The situation requires prompt attention. A persistent leak for weeks has created an ideal environment for mold, likely both in the wall cavity and the soaked carpet pad. The visible spots are just a fraction of the actual growth. You should first address the root cause: stop the AC leak immediately by having the unit serviced and the drain line cleared or repaired. This is the most urgent step.

For the mold itself, professional assessment is recommended. Disturbing it improperly can spread spores throughout the room. An inspector can use moisture meters and, if necessary, lab analysis to determine the extent of the problem behind the wall and in the carpet. Remediation for a case like this often involves controlled removal of the affected drywall and carpet, followed by HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatment to prevent recurrence.

Until it's resolved, improve ventilation in the room by opening windows when outdoor humidity is lower (typically early morning or evening) and consider using a dehumidifier. Do not attempt to clean the wall with bleach, as it may only temporarily remove the colour and not the root structure of the mold, while potentially worsening air quality.
