Are our mold symptoms serious and what's first step?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had a lingering damp smell ever since the heavy rains in February. I’ve started waking up with a stuffy nose and a headache that goes away a few hours after I leave for work, and my husband has developed a persistent cough. I’ve just pulled the bed away from the wall and found a small patch of black mold hidden behind it. Could these symptoms be from the mold, and what’s the first thing we should do to deal with this safely?

The symptoms you describe—morning congestion, headaches that resolve when leaving the environment, and a new cough—are very commonly reported in cases of indoor mold exposure. The damp smell and hidden growth confirm a moisture issue. In Dubai's climate, this often stems from condensation buildup behind furniture placed against exterior walls, which are cooled by year-round AC but heated by the sun, creating a perfect environment for mold.
Your first step is to stop the moisture source. Move the bed away from the wall permanently and ensure air can circulate freely. For the visible patch, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product can be used for a small area. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores. Do not attempt to scrub it, as this aerosolizes particles; instead, gently wipe and dispose of the cloth. Given the symptoms have already appeared, the hidden extent is likely greater than the small patch you found. Moisture can travel within walls. Professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the wall cavity with a borescope and check for condensation points. They can also perform air quality testing to identify spore types and concentrations, which is critical for determining the appropriate remediation strategy and verifying the environment is safe for you, especially with persistent respiratory symptoms. |
