Are sandstorms common allergen sources?« Back to Previous Page

After the recent sandstorms, I’ve noticed a faint dusting of fine particles settling on our furniture and even in corners that we usually don’t reach with regular cleaning. My family has also been complaining of itchy eyes and mild coughs, especially after coming inside from outside. Given our location near the beach, I’m worried this might be something more serious like mold or allergens. Could someone advise if this is common during sandstorms and what steps we should take to ensure everyone's health?

Sandstorms can indeed be a significant source of allergens and particulate matter in the UAE, especially for areas near coastlines. In the case of Dubai, the proximity to the Arabian Gulf may increase exposure to fine particles during sandstorms, leading to issues like you've described—dust settling on furniture and reports of itchy eyes and mild coughs.

In technical terms, sandstorm particulates can contain a mix of dust, soil, pollen, and other microorganisms. These components can exacerbate existing respiratory conditions or trigger allergies in individuals who are sensitive. The UAE's Ministry of Community Development and Social Affairs (MCDSA) and related bodies recommend maintaining indoor air quality during such events as part of the overall environmental health strategy.

To address your concerns effectively, it is advisable to take several proactive measures:

1. Regular Cleaning: Implement a strict cleaning routine focusing on areas where dust tends to accumulate. Utilize microfiber cloths which can trap more particles than traditional materials and ensure surfaces are thoroughly cleaned without over-dusting, as this can spread allergens.

2. Humidifiers & Air Purifiers: Consider using air purifiers equipped with HEPA filters or humidifiers that can help reduce airborne particulates and maintain a comfortable humidity level in your home.

3. Seal Gaps: Check for gaps around doors and windows and seal them to prevent sandstorm particles from entering the living spaces.

4. Use of Masks & Eye Protection: For individuals particularly sensitive to allergens, wearing masks when outdoors and using eye drops or protective goggles can provide some relief during high particulate events.

5. Professional Inspection: Given your symptoms, it might be wise to schedule a professional indoor air quality inspection by an accredited company such as Saniservice (contact them at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com). They can identify any potential mold growth or other hidden issues that might not be immediately obvious.

Remember, while sandstorms are common in the UAE and precautions can minimize their impact on indoor air quality, regular monitoring and proactive measures are key to maintaining a healthy environment.
