Are these black mold spots a serious health risk?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It's the wall facing the outside, and I'm worried it's been growing there a while, hidden by the furniture. My main concern is if this is a serious health risk we need to deal with immediately, or if it's something we can handle ourselves on the weekend.

Black spots behind furniture on an exterior wall in Jumeirah are a common sign of a condensation issue and should be taken seriously. The wall is likely colder due to your AC, and humidity from Dubai's air is condensing on it, creating the damp environment mould needs to grow.

Health risk depends on the mould species and your family's sensitivity. While not all black mould is the toxic Stachybotrys often mentioned, any active growth can release spores that cause irritation, persistent coughing, worsened allergies, or sinus congestion. For infants, elderly, or anyone with asthma, the risk is higher.

You should not attempt a significant cleanup yourself. Disturbing it without proper containment will aerosolize the spores, spreading them throughout your bedroom. For a growth that has been hidden and spreading for a potential two years, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the extent within the wall cavity. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see behind the surface. The root cause—likely insufficient insulation or a thermal bridge in the exterior wall—must be identified and rectified, or the mould will return quickly after cleaning.

A certified remediation company will contain the area, remove the contaminated materials safely, and treat the structure with antimicrobial solutions. The final, critical step is a post-remediation verification test, typically an air quality sample analyzed by an independent lab, to confirm the spore count inside the room has returned to acceptable levels.
