Are these health symptoms from mold in my bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has had a damp smell for a couple of months, but since last week’s heavy dew, I can actually see black spots spreading in the corner behind the wardrobe. I’ve been waking up with a stuffy nose, a sore throat, and headaches that just won’t quit. Is it possible these symptoms are from the mold, and what’s the first thing I should do to protect our health while we arrange to get it cleaned?

Yes, it is very possible your symptoms are linked to the mold. The described pattern—stuffy nose, sore throat, and persistent headaches that are worse upon waking—is a common reaction to prolonged exposure to mold spores in a sleeping environment. The high humidity and condensation from Dubai's climate, especially following heavy dew, create the perfect conditions for mold to flourish indoors, often behind furniture where air doesn't circulate.

The first step is to limit your exposure immediately. Move to another bedroom to sleep if possible. For the affected room, increase ventilation by opening windows when outdoor humidity is lower, typically early morning or evening, and run a dehumidifier if you have one. Do not attempt to scrub the visible mold yourself, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores. Disturbing it without proper containment can worsen your symptoms and spread the contamination.

You should arrange for a professional inspection. In serious cases like this, where there is visible growth and correlating health effects, a certified inspector can identify the moisture source (often a small leak in the AC system, a pipe in the wall, or condensation from temperature differentials) and assess the full extent. The most reliable method is a combination of visual inspection and air/o-surface sampling sent to an accredited microbiology lab, which can identify the species present and inform the appropriate remediation strategy. Proper remediation will involve isolating the area, removing the contaminated materials, and addressing the root moisture problem to prevent it from returning.
