Bathroom ceiling mold: DIY clean or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed black spots growing along the bottom of the bathroom ceiling, especially in the corner above the shower. It's been really humid lately and the smell is getting stronger. Is this something I can tackle myself with a spray from the store, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company to handle it properly?

The black spots on your bathroom ceiling are likely mold growth, which is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from daily showers and year-round AC use. Small surface mold on non-porous surfaces can often be addressed with a store-bought anti-fungal cleaner, white vinegar, or a diluted bleach solution. Always wear a mask and gloves, ensure good ventilation, and scrub the area thoroughly.
However, if the mold covers an area larger than a square meter, has a strong musty odor, or has penetrated a porous surface like drywall or ceiling tiles, DIY cleaning will likely only remove surface stains while the root colony remains. The persistent humidity here means it will quickly return. In apartments, this can sometimes indicate a hidden issue, like a leak from the unit above or within the wall. For a recurring or widespread problem, a professional assessment is recommended to identify the moisture source and extent of growth. They can perform remediation that includes containment to prevent spores from spreading to other rooms and use industrial-grade equipment like dehumidifiers to properly dry the structure, which is critical for a lasting solution in our climate. |
