Bathroom grout black and fuzzy: DIY fix or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning black and has a fuzzy texture. It's been like this for a couple of months, and I've tried scrubbing it with bleach spray, but it just comes back after a week or so. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger product, or is it time to call in a professional mold removal company to deal with it properly?

The black, fuzzy growth on your bathroom grout is almost certainly mold, a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and the constant cycling of air conditioning, which creates significant condensation. Your experience with bleach is typical; while it can remove surface discoloration, it does not address the root cause. Bleach is primarily water, which can actually feed mold growth deeper within the porous grout, leading to the rapid recurrence you've observed.

For a small, surface-level area, a professional-grade DIY approach can be attempted. I recommend using a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide, not bleach. Thoroughly scrub the grout lines with a stiff brush and the chemical, ensuring the bathroom is well-ventilated. The critical step is resolving the moisture source. You must run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and regularly wipe down wet surfaces. A squeegee for the shower walls is highly effective.

However, if the growth returns persistently despite these measures, it indicates a deeper colonization or a potential moisture issue within the wall itself. In such cases, and to ensure the health and safety of your home's occupants, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Regulations in the UAE, particularly for villas and apartments, emphasize maintaining a healthy indoor environment, and improper remediation can spread spores.

For a definitive solution, I recommend contacting our certified specialists at Saniservice. We can conduct a thorough inspection to identify the exact species and extent of the problem, including hidden moisture, and execute a proper remediation protocol.
