Bedroom AC leak causing mold: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I'm seeing a few small black spots in the corner behind the wardrobe. I'm worried it's spreading but I'm not sure if it's bad enough to call a professional yet. Is this something I can tackle myself with vinegar or do I need to get a proper mold remediation company in?

AC leaks in Dubai's climate create ideal mold conditions due to constant humidity and condensation. The black spots behind the wardrobe are a visible sign, but the real concern is the hidden moisture in the carpet padding and wall cavity, which will continue to spread unseen.

For a leak lasting weeks, DIY is not recommended. Surface cleaning with vinegar only addresses visible mold, not the saturated materials or the root cause (the AC leak). Ineffective treatment can aerosolize spores and worsen indoor air quality.

You need two professionals: an AC technician to fix the leak at the source and a mold inspector. A proper assessment involves moisture meters and, if needed, lab testing to identify the species, as some types common in AC systems can cause more significant irritation. Remediation then involves removing the affected carpet section, drying the subfloor, and treating the area with professional-grade biocides.

The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor air quality, and addressing this properly is key to preventing recurrence and potential health effects, especially in a bedroom. Request a detailed assessment from a company that provides documented proof of remediation, not just a visual clean.
