Best dehumidifier for a damp bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
My master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. I noticed it after that really humid spell we had last week, and even though I run the AC constantly, that corner just feels damp. What's the best dehumidifier or moisture absorber I can get to stop this from happening again before it ruins more of my stuff?

That damp feeling and black spots are classic signs of condensation mould, a very common issue here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The closet's outside wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the indoor cold surface meets warm, humid air, causing water to condense—just like on a cold drink can.
For a closet, a small electric desiccant dehumidifier is your best bet. Look for a compact model with a capacity of around 10-12 litres per day; it will be effective for that enclosed space and is quiet enough for a bedroom. Ensure it has an auto-shutoff and a continuous drainage option if possible. Silica gel-based moisture absorbers are a temporary, non-electric stopgap, but they saturate quickly in Dubai's climate and won't solve the underlying condensation issue. However, a dehumidifier only manages the symptom. The core problem is likely poor insulation on that external wall and insufficient airflow in the closed closet. For a permanent fix, you need to address the condensation source. Leave the closet door ajar to allow conditioned air to circulate, and avoid pushing stored items directly against the outside wall. Given the visible mould growth, a professional inspection is wise. They can use a thermal camera to identify the exact cold spot and a moisture meter to quantify the dampness. This determines if the issue is superficial condensation or something more serious, like a hidden leak from the AC condensate drain or a crack in the external wall, which would require remediation. |
