Best dehumidifier for a damp closet in humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started getting black spots on my leather bags and shoes. I noticed it after that period of heavy humidity last month, and even though I run the AC constantly, it feels damp in there. What’s the best dehumidifier or moisture absorber I can get to stop this from getting worse before the next humid season?

A compact desiccant dehumidifier is your best choice for a small, enclosed space like a closet, as they are more effective than refrigerant models in Dubai's high ambient temperatures. Look for a model with a capacity rated for at least 10-20 square meters; brands like Eva-Dry or Meaco are commonly available and reliable for this purpose.

However, a dehumidifier only manages the symptom. The black spots indicate an active mold issue, and the damp feeling suggests a persistent moisture source. In villas, this is often condensation from the AC's cold air hitting the warm exterior wall inside the closet, or a minor leak in the wall's waterproofing exacerbated by the high humidity. Placing a dehumidifier inside will help protect your belongings short-term but will not resolve the root cause.

Before the next humid season, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify if this is simple condensation or requires remediation. For condensation, the fix is often improving air circulation by installing a louvered door or a small duct from the AC to that space, which is more effective and permanent than any appliance.
