Best dehumidifier for a damp, moldy closet?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting fuzzy black spots on my leather bags and shoes, and it's only been since the weather got really humid a couple of weeks ago. I keep the AC running but it's still feels damp in that corner. What's the best dehumidifier or moisture absorber I can get locally to prevent this from getting worse and protect my stuff?

That fuzzy black growth on your leather is almost certainly mold, a direct result of our high humidity condensing on the cold outside wall of your closet. Even with AC running, that enclosed, stagnant space is a perfect microclimate for it.

For a closet, start with a compact desiccant dehumidifier or moisture absorber. Look for a product with calcium chloride crystals, as they are more effective than silica gel in our extreme humidity. Brands like Eva-Dry are commonly available at Ace Hardware, Carrefour, or online. Ensure it's the correct size for the enclosed space.

However, a dehumidifier only manages the symptom. The moisture is likely seeping through the wall or from condensation. For a lasting solution, first move your valuables and wipe the surfaces with a dilute vinegar solution to address the existing growth. Then, improve air circulation; a small battery-operated fan in the closet can make a significant difference. Ensure the AC vent isn't blocked and that the room's door is left open periodically.

If the mold returns quickly or you see it on the walls themselves, the issue may be more serious, like a hidden leak or insufficient insulation. In that case, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify the exact source of the dampness, which is critical for an effective, permanent fix.
