Best dehumidifier for a damp, windowless walk-in closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom's walk-in closet, which doesn't have a window, has started to get a really strong damp smell on all our clothes and bags, especially since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago. I'm worried the spores are affecting our sleep, as we've both been waking up with stuffy noses. We run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help in that enclosed space. What's the most effective dehumidifier or moisture absorber I can buy locally that will actually work in a small, enclosed closet to prevent this mold from coming back?

A small, portable electric dehumidifier is the most effective solution for a windowless closet in Dubai. Look for a model with a capacity of 10-12 liters per day and a built-in humidistat, which allows it to automatically maintain an ideal 50-55% humidity level and shut off when the tank is full. This is crucial for a small, enclosed space where you don't want it to over-dry.

Given the UAE's high ambient humidity, simple moisture-absorbing crystals or boxes are often insufficient for an active dampness problem; they are better for preventative maintenance in drawers. For a closet already emitting a strong smell, an electric unit is necessary to actively pull significant moisture from the air and stored items like clothes and bags.

However, the damp smell indicates existing mold growth, likely on walls, ceilings, or within the HVAC system serving that room. A dehumidifier will only manage future humidity; it will not address the current microbial contamination. The stuffy noses are a common reaction to mold spores and VOCs.

Before relying solely on a dehumidifier, a professional inspection is advised to identify and remediate the active growth source. In many Dubai villas, this is caused by insufficient AC airflow into closets, leading to condensation, or a breach in the building's vapor barrier. Solving the root cause is essential to prevent recurrence. After remediation, the dehumidifier will be effective for ongoing protection.
