Best dehumidifier for a humid Dubai apartment closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has started getting these black speckles on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. It's been super humid the last few weeks and I think the lack of air circulation is to blame. What’s the best dehumidifier or moisture absorber I can get here to stop this from spreading to my clothes?

For a closet in Jumeirah Village Circle, a compact electric dehumidifier or a renewable desiccant moisture absorber is your best bet. The constant high humidity here, especially during summer and the recent foggy periods, creates ideal conditions for mold on leather and fabrics in stagnant spaces.

Look for a small electric dehumidifier with a capacity of 10-20 litres per day; this is sufficient for a single room or large closet. Many reputable brands available at retailers like ACE Hardware or online are effective. Alternatively, renewable silica gel desiccant boxes (like those from Dry & Dry) are a passive, energy-free option. They work well in enclosed spaces and can be reactivated in a microwave or oven when saturated.

Place the unit directly inside the closet and keep the door closed as much as possible for maximum efficiency. Ensure your AC is running consistently, as this is your primary whole-home dehumidifier. Set it to a lower temperature to reduce the indoor humidity level.

Those black speckles are very likely active mold growth. Before placing any dehumidifier, the closet must be cleaned. Wipe down all surfaces with a diluted vinegar or specialized mold-cleaning solution to remove the existing spores, and carefully clean your affected items to prevent reinfection. If the growth is widespread or has penetrated the walls, a professional inspection can identify the species and root cause. Saniservice's lab testing can provide a definitive diagnosis in such cases.
