Best dehumidifier for a humid UAE apartment closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
My walk-in closet in my Marina apartment has started to feel damp, and a few of my leather bags have developed a fuzzy white mold on them. This seems to be worst in the early mornings, and it's only started becoming a real problem in the last couple of months. I run the AC constantly, but it doesn't seem to be enough to stop it.
What's the most effective type of dehumidifier for a small, enclosed space like a closet that doesn't have a window, and should I be looking for a certain capacity for the UAE's extreme humidity?

Good afternoon. That's a classic and unfortunately very common issue we see in Marina and similar tower apartments, especially during the more humid months. The constant AC running is part of the problem—while it cools, it often doesn't run long enough in a single cycle to adequately remove the massive moisture load from our Gulf climate, leading to a cold, damp environment perfect for mold, particularly in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets.
For a small, enclosed closet without a window, you need a compact, desiccant-type dehumidifier. These are ideal because they work effectively at lower temperatures (unlike refrigerant models, which struggle in the cool temps your AC creates) and are very quiet. Look for a unit with a capacity of at least 10-12 liters per day extraction; our extreme humidity demands over-capacity. Brands like Eva-Dry are popular, but ensure it has a rechargeable or continuous drainage option. You'll also want one with a built-in humidistat to auto-regulate. However, a crucial first step is to identify the moisture source. The dampness feeling, especially in the morning, can indicate a deeper issue like a minor plumbing leak in the adjacent wall or insufficient insulation against the cold exterior wall—a common construction flaw here. The mold on your leather goods is a significant sign of a persistent problem. For a case like this, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our teams use thermal imaging cameras and precise moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the humidity, which is often not where you think it is. Treating the symptom (with a dehumidifier) is good, but solving the root cause is essential to protect your property and health. Please give us a call for a proper assessment.
