Best dehumidifier for a moldy closet in humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has a persistent damp smell and I just found a small patch of black mold on a leather bag. We run the AC constantly but it's also the most humid room in our apartment in Jumeirah Lakes Towers. What's the best dehumidifier or preventative product we can put in there to stop this from getting worse?

Small, portable electric dehumidifiers are your best bet. Look for a compact model with a capacity of 10-20 litres per day and an auto-shutoff feature for the small reservoir. Place it directly inside the closet. For a passive solution, disposable moisture absorber boxes with calcium chloride crystals can help, but they require frequent replacement in Dubai's high humidity and are less effective than an electric unit.

However, a dehumidifier only manages the symptom. The core issue is likely inadequate air circulation and a potential thermal bridge in that interior wall, causing condensation. Running the AC constantly lowers temperature, not necessarily humidity in a sealed, stagnant space like a closet. Leave the closet doors open for a few hours daily to allow conditioned air to circulate. Ensure the room's AC vent isn't blocked and is blowing directly into the room.

Given the smell and visible growth, a professional inspection is prudent. The mold on the bag is a sign of a larger problem within the wall cavity or behind the baseboards, which a surface-level product cannot fix. In Dubai, remediation standards require addressing the moisture source first. A certified inspector can use a borescope to check inside the wall for hidden growth and a moisture meter to pinpoint the dampness source before any cleaning is attempted.
