Best dehumidifier for a moldy closet in humid Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started to get dark, fuzzy patches on the leather shoes and bags I stored there, and I'm worried it's going to ruin everything. It's been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. What's the best dehumidifier or moisture absorber I can get to stop this from happening again, and should I be cleaning the closet walls with something specific first?

That's likely mold, and it's a common issue here given our high humidity. Leather is particularly vulnerable as it absorbs moisture from the air.

First, address the current growth. Wipe down all closet walls, shelves, and surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated antimicrobial cleaner. This removes the active growth. Remove all items from the closet and inspect them thoroughly; mold spores can spread from contaminated leather goods.

For a closet of that size, a compact electric dehumidifier with a capacity of 10-12 litres per day is typically sufficient. Look for a model with a built-in humidistat that allows you to set a target humidity level (aim for 50-55%) and an auto-shutoff feature for when the tank is full. Desiccant-based moisture absorbers like silica gel canisters are a good supplemental option, but for a persistent problem in a Jumeirah apartment, an electric unit will be far more effective at controlling the environment.

The root cause is likely inadequate airflow and a microclimate inside the closed closet. Ensure your apartment's AC is running consistently, as this is the primary dehumidifier for your home. Leave the closet door ajar periodically to allow conditioned air to circulate. If the problem recurs after these measures, the moisture source might be more significant, such as a small condensation leak from an AC pipe in the wall, which would require a professional inspection to identify.
