Best dehumidifier for closet mold in humid Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment has started getting these black spots on the leather shoes and bags I store there, especially after the recent humid weather. I’m really worried it’s mold and it’s going to ruin my stuff. I run the AC but it doesn’t seem to be enough. What’s the most effective dehumidifier or moisture absorber I can buy locally to stop this from happening?

That black spotting on leather is a classic sign of a high-humidity micro-environment, and it's very common in Dubai closets, even with AC running. The AC lowers the overall room temperature, but closets are often poorly ventilated and can become pockets of stagnant, humid air, especially during our summer months.
For a small, enclosed space like a closet, a commercial desiccant dehumidifier is your most effective solution. Look for a compact, electric model with a Peltier module—they are quiet, energy-efficient for their size, and ideal for areas under 15m². Brands like Eva-Dry are widely available at retailers such as ACE Hardware, Home Centre, and online on Amazon.ae. Avoid the cheap, non-electric silica gel boxes for this problem; they saturate far too quickly in our climate to be practical. However, a dehumidifier only manages the symptom. The moisture is coming from somewhere. Before you place the unit, inspect the closet interior and the adjacent external wall for any signs of condensation or a potential hidden leak from plumbing or the AC drain line, which is a frequent issue here. Wipe down all surfaces with a dilute vinegar solution to address the existing surface mould. For valuable items like leather goods, the priority is to remove them from the affected environment immediately to prevent further damage. Have them professionally cleaned and conditioned. If the mould returns quickly after using a dehumidifier and cleaning, this indicates a persistent moisture source that requires professional diagnosis. A certified inspection can identify the root cause, be it inadequate ventilation, a construction issue, or a leak, and recommend a targeted remediation plan. |
