Best exhaust fan or dehumidifier for a UAE bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has no window and after every shower, the steam just sits there for ages. We’ve been wiping down the walls but I just spotted a few black speckles in the grout between the tiles. What’s the most effective exhaust fan or dehumidifier we can get here in the UAE to stop this for good?

Bathroom mould in Dubai is almost always due to excess humidity, especially in windowless bathrooms where steam has no escape. The most effective permanent solution is a properly sized exhaust fan, not a dehumidifier, due to space constraints and the need for immediate moisture removal.
For a standard ensuite, an exhaust fan with a minimum extraction rate of 100 CFM (cubic feet per minute) is the baseline. Look for models rated for continuous, quiet operation, as you'll need to run it for at least 30 minutes after each shower. UAE suppliers commonly stock brands like Panasonic or Vent-Axia that meet these specs. Ensure it is installed to vent directly outside, not into a ceiling void, which is a common installation error that worsens the problem. While a dehumidifier can help, it's less practical for a small, frequently used bathroom. It requires emptying a water tank and takes up floor space. Your priority is removing moist air instantly. Beyond the fan, keep wiping down walls and squeegee the shower area to remove standing water. For the existing black speckles, a vinegar or diluted hydrogen peroxide solution can often treat surface mould on grout. However, if the mould persists or you see it spreading behind silicone seals, the spores may have penetrated deeper. In that case, a professional inspection can determine if remediation is needed before it affects underlying structures. The key is consistent moisture control; run the fan during and long after your shower to replicate the drying effect of a window. |
