Best local product to kill bathroom mold for good?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the grout between the tiles right behind our toilet. It’s a small windowless bathroom and the AC vent is on the opposite wall, so it always feels a bit damp. What's the best local product I can pick up at a store like ACE to kill this for good and stop it from coming back?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is almost always due to high humidity and condensation, especially in a windowless space. The best local product for immediate removal is a chlorine-based mold and mildew remover spray, widely available at ACE or supermarkets. Look for one with at least 5% sodium hypochlorite as the active ingredient. Spray it directly on the grout, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse.

However, these products only address the visible growth, not the underlying moisture problem. In a damp, windowless bathroom, mold will almost certainly return unless you manage the humidity. For a lasting solution, focus on reducing moisture. Run the bathroom's exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If you don't have one, installation is often a building code requirement for such spaces. Wiping down wet walls and tiles with a squeegee immediately after use also helps tremendously. A small, portable dehumidifier can be very effective for a small bathroom.

If the mold is widespread, has penetrated behind the tiles, or returns aggressively despite these measures, the issue may be more serious. Persistent black spots can sometimes indicate Stachybotrys, which requires professional assessment. In such cases, a certified inspection can identify the species and the source of moisture, which is crucial for a permanent fix.
