Best long-term solution for bedroom mold in humid villa?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. We live in a villa in Mirdif and it's been so humid lately. What's the best long-term solution to stop this from coming back after I clean it?

The best long-term solution requires addressing the moisture source, not just wiping away the visible growth. In Mirdif's humidity, the issue is likely condensation or a small leak. For a bedroom, this is often caused by cool air from an AC unit hitting the exterior wall behind the wardrobe, creating a perpetual damp surface where mould thrives.

First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation. Clean the current growth with a diluted vinegar or detergent solution, but note this is a temporary fix. The core solution is environmental control. Ensure your AC is set to maintain a consistent indoor humidity level below 60%, which is the threshold for most mould growth. Use a hygrometer to monitor this. Consider a dedicated dehumidifier for that room if the AC cannot manage the load, especially during the more humid summer months. Check the exterior wall for any cracks or compromised seals that might be letting in humid air.

For a persistent problem, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source, which could be a small plumbing leak or insufficient insulation. They can perform a surface moisture reading on the wall to confirm the cause. The long-term fix may involve improving room ventilation, adding a vapour barrier, or addressing the thermal bridging that causes condensation on that specific wall.
