Best long-term solution for recurring black mold in Dubai villa closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our villa in Al Barsha has been getting a stubborn black mold in the master bedroom closet, especially on the leather bags and shoes we store there. It seems to get much worse during the humid summer months even though we run the AC constantly. We had a company come and clean it last year but it’s already coming back. What’s the most effective long-term solution to stop this from happening again, is it a dehumidifier, a specific type of paint, or something else we’re missing?

The recurring mold points to an unresolved moisture source, not just surface contamination. In Dubai's climate, closets on exterior walls are prone to condensation from the temperature differential between the hot outside and the cooled interior. The leather items themselves can also hold and release moisture, creating a perfect micro-climate for mold.
A dehumidifier is a strong temporary measure but doesn't address the root cause. The most effective long-term solution is a combined approach. First, identify and correct the moisture intrusion. This could be inadequate insulation in that specific wall, a small plumbing leak in the adjacent bathroom, or insufficient air circulation. A professional inspection with a thermal imaging camera and moisture meter is crucial here to find the exact source. For the closet itself, improve ventilation. Leave the closet doors ajar regularly, and consider installing louvered doors or a small, quiet ventilation fan to prevent stagnant, humid air. Store leather goods in breathable fabric bags, not plastic, and use moisture-absorbing desiccants like silica gel packets inside the closet. Anti-microbial paint can help on walls, but it's a final barrier, not a solution—it will fail if the moisture issue persists. Since the problem has returned after a prior remediation, the previous cleaning likely only addressed the visible growth, not the underlying humidity problem. A proper remediation for a recurring issue like this should include sealing the closet to contain spores during cleaning, using HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatments, and most importantly, providing a written cause-and-correction report from the provider. |
