Best long-term solution to prevent black mold from returning?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’m worried it’s from the black mold I just found in the corner of their bedroom closet. We’re in a Jumeirah villa and I know the humidity has been brutal this summer. What’s the best long-term solution to stop this from coming back after I clean it? Should I invest in a dehumidifier or is there something else I should be doing?

Black mold in a Jumeirah villa closet is a classic sign of excess moisture, which is extremely common here given our high humidity levels and condensation from year-round AC use. The best long-term solution requires addressing the moisture source, not just cleaning the visible growth.

First, identify and fix the source of the humidity. In closets on exterior walls, this is often condensation from the temperature differential between the air-conditioned room and the hot outside wall. Ensure the AC is functioning correctly and not set at an excessively low temperature, as this increases condensation. Improve air circulation around the closet by keeping doors ajar and not overpacking it with items. For a more permanent fix, consider adding ventilation grilles to the closet door or the interior wall.

A dehumidifier can help reduce the overall ambient humidity in the room, especially during the more humid summer months. Aim to keep indoor relative humidity below 60%, as this is the threshold where mold growth is significantly inhibited.

However, for a recurring black mold issue, a professional inspection is highly recommended to assess the extent. In many villas, the problem originates from a small hidden leak in the plumbing or from insulation issues within the wall itself. A thorough inspection can pinpoint the exact cause. The long-term fix may involve improving wall insulation, repairing a leak, or applying anti-microbial coatings after the area is properly remediated. For health concerns, especially with children, a lab test can confirm the mold type and ensure the remediation plan is appropriate.
