Best product to kill and prevent bathroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the bathroom wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It's been really humid lately and I think the steam from our showers isn't venting properly through the small window. What's the most effective product I can find locally to kill this and prevent it from coming back?

Black mold in bathroom corners is extremely common in Dubai, especially in high-humidity areas like Marina. The combination of steam from hot showers and our constant air conditioning creates significant condensation, which allows mold to thrive on cooler surfaces like ceilings and external walls.

For a small patch you've just noticed, most supermarkets and hardware stores like ACE or Carrefour carry antifungal sprays. Look for products containing chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite) for non-porous surfaces or hydrogen peroxide-based solutions for painted walls, as they can be less damaging to the paint finish. Apply it directly to the area, let it sit for the time specified on the label, then scrub and wipe clean. Always ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated during and after treatment.

However, killing visible mold is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved. The small window is likely insufficient for proper ventilation. For prevention, using an exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower is critical. Wiping down wet walls and ceiling corners with a squeegee after showering can also measurably reduce the moisture that mold feeds on. In many cases, a portable dehumidifier used in the bathroom after showers can help bring humidity levels down quickly.

If the mold returns persistently after cleaning or covers an area larger than a square meter, the problem may be more systemic. In apartments, this can indicate a leak from another unit or within the wall, or insufficient insulation causing chronic condensation. In these serious cases, a professional inspection can identify the true moisture source, as DIY solutions will not be effective long-term.
