Best product to kill bathroom mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold that's growing in the grout between the bathroom tiles. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it creeping up the wall behind the toilet, probably because the room never fully dries out. I'm in a villa in Mirdif, and I'm worried about their health. What's the most effective local product I can get from ACE or any supermarket here to kill this for good, and should I call building maintenance about it first?

For persistent black mold in bathroom grout, start with a concentrated hydrogen peroxide solution (3% or higher) or a chlorine-based mold remover, both widely available at ACE or supermarkets like Carrefour. These are more effective than vinegar in Dubai's high humidity, which prevents bathrooms from drying fully.

Before applying any product, scrub the area with a stiff brush to remove surface growth. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores. After treatment, run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least an hour after showers and wipe down wet surfaces to reduce moisture.

Since the mold is behind the toilet and your children are experiencing respiratory issues, this suggests a deeper moisture issue, possibly from a hidden leak in the plumbing or a failed seal. For a villa, you should indeed contact maintenance to inspect for and repair any leaks, as killing the surface mold is only a temporary fix if the water source remains.

For health concerns with ongoing symptoms, a professional inspection can identify the mold type and extent. In many Dubai villas, what appears on the surface is just the visible part of a larger colony within the wall cavity, especially behind tiles. A certified inspection with lab analysis of a tape lift sample is the only way to confirm the species and potential health risks.
