Best product to kill black mold in shower grout?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black and green spots spreading along the grout in our master bathroom shower. The room has no window and the exhaust fan is pretty weak, so it always feels damp. What's the most effective product I can pick up at a local hardware store like ACE to kill this for good?

Bleach-based cleaners are common but often only remove surface discoloration, not the root mold penetrating porous grout. For a DIY approach, a hydrogen peroxide solution (3-5%) or a dedicated EPA-approved mold remover spray from a store like ACE can be more effective. Look for products containing chlorine dioxide or quaternary ammonium compounds.
Apply the product, let it soak for the recommended time, then scrub with a stiff brush. However, this is a temporary fix for the recurring issue you've described. The root cause is the Dubai humidity combined with poor ventilation and constant condensation from your AC. Without addressing the damp environment, the mold will return. For a lasting solution, improve airflow. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider upgrading to a more powerful unit. Wipe down wet surfaces with a squeegee after use. If the mold is widespread, has a musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the growth may be behind the tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture mapping is needed to assess the hidden damage. |
