Best product to remove and prevent shower mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these black spots appearing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It's been really humid lately and the room doesn't have a window, so I'm guessing it's mold. What's the most effective product I can find locally to kill this and stop it from coming back?

Black mold spots in shower grout are extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and lack of ventilation in many bathrooms. For a small, surface-level issue you've described, a concentrated hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner is often the most effective and least damaging option for grout. Look for products specifically labeled for mold and mildew removal; many are available at ACE Hardware or other home stores.

Apply the product directly to the grout, let it sit for the recommended time (usually 10-15 minutes), then scrub with a stiff brush. Never mix cleaning chemicals, especially bleach with ammonia, as this creates toxic gas.

Preventing its return is more important than killing it once. The root cause is excess moisture. After every shower, use a squeegee on the walls to remove standing water and run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes to remove humid air. If your fan is weak or you don't have one, a portable dehumidifier can help significantly. For persistent regrowth, the mold may have penetrated deeper into the porous grout or behind the tiles.

If the area is larger than one square foot, keeps returning despite thorough cleaning, or you notice a musty smell, the issue may be beyond a surface clean. In these cases, a professional inspection can identify hidden moisture sources and the specific mold type to guide the correct remediation strategy.
