Best product to remove black mold from shower ceiling?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold forming in the corner where the shower stall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It’s been incredibly humid lately, and the bathroom ventilation fan has always been a bit weak. What’s the most effective product I can find locally to kill and remove this for good?

Bleach diluted with water (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) is a common and effective DIY solution for non-porous surfaces like tile grout. For painted ceilings or drywall, which are porous, a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner or concentrated white vinegar is often a better choice to penetrate the material and kill the root structure.

Your situation in a Marina apartment is typical for Dubai. Weak bathroom fans cannot keep up with the extreme humidity, leading to condensation that mold feeds on. Before treating, run the AC on a cool, dry setting and use a dehumidifier to reduce the room's moisture level as much as possible. Scrub the area with your chosen solution, but avoid simply painting over it, as the mold will likely return.

If the patch is larger than one square meter, has a musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the moisture issue may be more significant. In such cases, a professional inspection can identify if there’s a hidden leak in the plumbing or building envelope, or if the ventilation requires an upgrade to meet Dubai Municipality standards for indoor air quality.
