Best way to dry wet carpet to prevent mold?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet, and now I'm terrified of black mold growing under there with all this humidity. We had a small issue in the closet last winter, and I don't want a repeat. What's the absolute best way to dry the carpet and padding out completely to prevent it from coming back?

Dry the area immediately using a wet-dry vacuum to extract as much water as possible. Then, use high-velocity fans and a dehumidifier running continuously for at least 48-72 hours to dry the carpet and, more critically, the underlying padding. In Dubai's high humidity, simply air-drying is insufficient and almost guarantees mold growth.

The padding is the primary concern; it acts like a sponge and is nearly impossible to dry in place. For a leak from an AC unit, which is considered Category 1 water (clean source), the carpet can often be saved if dried thoroughly and quickly. However, if the water has seeped deep and the padding remains damp, the only way to prevent mold is to remove the carpet, discard the wet padding, dry the subfloor, and install new padding.

Given you've had a previous issue, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to detect hidden dampness in walls or subfloors that are not visible. This is a common problem in villas here due to constant AC operation causing condensation. A proper assessment can determine if the drying was successful or if more extensive remediation is needed to prevent a recurring problem.
