Best way to permanently treat black mold in humid bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. Our villa in Jumeirah Park gets really humid, especially during the summer, and I'm worried it's spreading behind the clothes. What's the best way to treat this ourselves to stop it for good, and should we invest in a dehumidifier for that specific room?

That black patch is a classic sign of high humidity and condensation, a very common issue in Dubai villas, especially in closets on interior walls with poor air circulation.

Start by addressing the moisture source. Move everything out of the closet and clean the visible mold with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning. For porous surfaces like drywall, the mold may have penetrated; scrubbing the surface may not be a permanent fix if the wall remains damp.

The key to stopping it for good is controlling the humidity. A dehumidifier for that room is an excellent investment and often necessary. Aim to keep indoor relative humidity below 60%. Ensure your AC is running efficiently and that the closet door is left open periodically to allow cool, dry air to circulate. Check for any leaks from adjacent bathrooms or pipes in the wall.

For a patch on an interior wall, there's a significant chance the growth is more extensive inside the wall cavity. If the mold reappears quickly after cleaning, if the area is larger than one square meter, or if you detect a persistent musty smell, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess hidden damage, as complete remediation requires addressing the root cause within the structure.
