Best way to prevent mold in UAE closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started getting a fuzzy black mold on our leather bags and shoes. It’s been really humid the last few weeks and I think the lack of air circulation in there is the main culprit. What's the best way to prevent this from coming back—should I get a dehumidifier, those moisture absorber boxes, or is there a better solution for UAE homes?

The fuzzy black mold on your leather items is a classic sign of condensation and stagnant air, a very common issue in Jumeirah villas due to the high humidity. The outside wall is likely cooler from air conditioning, causing moisture in the warm air to condense on it and your belongings, creating the perfect environment for mold.

Start by thoroughly cleaning the affected items with a leather-safe disinfectant and the closet interior with a white vinegar or diluted bleach solution. For prevention, improving air circulation is your most effective first step. Leave the closet doors open for a few hours each day and consider installing a small, battery-operated vent fan if possible. A compact dehumidifier is a strong solution for a confined, problematic space like this, as it actively removes moisture. Moisture absorber boxes (like silica gel) can help but will need frequent replacement in our climate and are better for maintenance after the humidity is under control.

For a persistent problem, the issue might be more systemic, such as a small leak in the external wall or insufficient insulation. A professional inspection can identify if there's a hidden source of moisture that needs to be addressed to prevent it from returning.
