Best way to remove black mold behind toilet?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Mirdif villa has had this musty smell for weeks, but I finally found the source: a patch of black mold growing behind the toilet where the wall meets the floor. It’s been so humid lately and I think that’s making it worse. What's the best way to get rid of it for good, and should I be calling my landlord about this or handling it myself first?

Black mold behind the toilet is a common issue in Dubai villas due to the high humidity and condensation from showers. The best initial approach is to clean it yourself if the patch is small—smaller than a square foot. Wear a mask and gloves. For porous surfaces like drywall or grout, scrubbing with a dedicated mold remover or a diluted bleach solution can remove the surface growth. However, this often doesn't address the root cause.

The persistent humidity and potential for hidden moisture, especially in a villa where a leak from the toilet seal or plumbing could be feeding the mold behind the wall, mean it frequently returns. If the area is larger, has a strong musty odor, or comes back after cleaning, a professional inspection is needed to identify the hidden moisture source. In many Mirdif villas, the wall itself can be damp.

Under UAE tenancy law, structural issues and hidden leaks are typically the landlord's responsibility to rectify. It is reasonable to inform them, especially to request a plumber check for leaks at the toilet base. For a confirmed and persistent mold issue, a professional remediation service that includes moisture mapping and post-clearance verification is the most reliable solution to ensure it doesn't recur.
