Best way to remove black mold from bedroom wall myself?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots spreading along the corner of the bedroom wall behind the wardrobe. It's been really humid the last few weeks and I suspect that's the cause. What's the best way to get rid of it for good without having to call a professional company right away?

Black mould in bedroom corners is common here due to our high humidity and the way AC cooling creates condensation on walls, especially behind furniture blocking airflow. For a small patch you've just noticed, you can handle it yourself if you address both the mould and the moisture.

First, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to four parts water. Apply it directly to the mould, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Avoid bleach; it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper into porous surfaces like plasterboard. After scrubbing, wipe the area clean with a damp cloth and ensure it is thoroughly dried. A fan or dehumidifier will help.

The critical step is stopping it from returning. Move the wardrobe a few inches away from the wall to improve air circulation. Wipe down that corner weekly to check for condensation, which is a sign your AC might be set too cold for the room's humidity level.

If the spots return within a few weeks, cover more than one square meter, or you notice a persistent musty smell, the issue is likely deeper within the wall. In those cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and possibly lab testing is needed to identify the root cause, as DIY surface cleaning won't solve a hidden problem.
