Best way to remove mold from a closed wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Mirdif has been feeling really humid lately, and I just found a patch of black mold in the corner of our walk-in wardrobe where we store our winter clothes and shoes. We run the AC constantly, but this closet is on an interior wall and doesn't seem to get much air circulation. I'm worried it will spread to our expensive coats and leather items. What's the most effective way to kill the existing mold and what kind of dehumidifier or moisture absorber would you recommend specifically for a closed storage space like this to stop it from coming back?

The black mold in your Mirdif wardrobe is a classic Dubai issue, caused by high ambient humidity meeting a cold interior wall (a thermal bridge), creating condensation in a stagnant air pocket. The AC lowers overall home humidity but can't reach sealed closets.

For removal, first identify the mold's extent. If it's a patch smaller than one square meter and only on the surface, you can address it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. For non-porous surfaces, scrub with a mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated mildew cleaner. For porous materials like drywall or the back of wooden shelves, cleaning may not remove the roots; the affected material may need cutting out and replacing.

Preventing its return is about controlling moisture. A small, electric desiccant dehumidifier is most effective for a sealed space like a walk-in wardrobe, as they perform well in Dubai's cooler indoor AC temperatures. Reusable silica gel desiccant packs are a passive alternative for smaller enclosed areas like shoe boxes within the closet.

The most critical step is improving air circulation. Leave the wardrobe doors ajar periodically and consider installing a small, low-energy consumption ventilation fan if the space is large. For valuable items like leather goods, professional mold remediation and a detailed inspection to find the moisture source are recommended to protect your investment and ensure the problem is fully resolved.
