Best way to remove shower grout mold in humid bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. I think it's mold, but I'm not sure the best way to tackle it in this humidity. What's the most effective product I can find locally to kill it and stop it from coming back?

The black spots you're observing in your shower grout are almost certainly mold, a very common issue in Dubai due to our high ambient humidity and the condensation created by hot showers and year-round air conditioning. This environment provides the constant moisture mold needs to thrive.
For a small, localized area, you can attempt a DIY remediation. The most effective and readily available product is a high-concentration hydrogen peroxide solution (6-12%), which you can find at larger pharmacies or cleaning supply stores. It is more effective and less toxic than bleach, which only removes surface discoloration without killing the root structure. Apply it directly to the grout, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub vigorously with a stiff brush. For persistent growth, a paste of baking soda and white vinegar can be used for abrasive scrubbing after the peroxide application. However, it is critical to address the underlying moisture issue. Ensure your bathroom's mechanical ventilation system is functioning correctly and run it for at least 30 minutes after showering. Wipe down wet tiles and glass surfaces with a squeegee to remove standing water. If the mold covers a large area (more than one square meter), has penetrated deeply into the grout, or if you have any concerns about potential health effects, professional assessment is strongly recommended. DIY methods often fail to address hidden mold within wall cavities, which is a significant risk in our climate.
