Black AC duct mold: DIY clean or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from our AC unit in the master bedroom. I pulled off the vent cover and the inside of the duct looks black and fuzzy, and the smell is really strong. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this now after the recent humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach spray, or do I need to call a professional AC cleaning company in Dubai to handle the ducts?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of hidden mold contamination within your AC system, a very common issue here in the UAE due to our extreme humidity and the constant cycling of AC units. That black, fuzzy growth is almost certainly mold, and the strong musty smell confirms active microbial growth.

Do not use bleach. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like sheet metal ducts, as it only bleaches the surface mold without killing the roots. It also introduces moisture, which is the very cause of the problem, and the fumes can be extremely hazardous when distributed throughout your home via the AC. This is a significant health risk, especially for children with developing respiratory systems, and likely the source of the coughing.

For a situation this severe, a simple AC cleaning company is not sufficient. They are not equipped or certified to handle hazardous microbial contamination. This requires a professional mold assessment from a certified environmental inspector. We follow strict UAE guidelines for indoor air quality and remediation. The process involves a full inspection with moisture meters and borescams to see deep inside the ducts, followed by professional air and surface sampling to identify the exact species and concentration of mold. This data is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol.

The remediation itself involves containing the area, using HEPA filtration systems to capture spores, and applying EPA-approved biocides specifically designed for HVAC systems to eradicate the growth at its source.

For the health of your family, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive assessment. We can determine the full extent of the problem and provide a safe, permanent solution.
