Black AC mold in JLT: clean myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Lakes Towers has been making us all cough, and I finally pulled the filter out to find it completely black with what looks like mold. It’s been getting worse over the hot summer and I’m worried it’s spread inside the unit itself. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach and a brush, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company to handle it?

A black-coated AC filter in JLT is a strong indicator of microbial growth, which is common here due to high humidity and year-round AC use causing constant condensation. This is likely the source of your respiratory irritation.
For a surface-level issue confined only to the removable filter, you can clean it yourself with a diluted vinegar solution (not bleach, as it can damage components and its fumes are hazardous in enclosed spaces) and a soft brush. Replace the filter if possible. However, since you have symptoms and suspect it has spread inside the unit, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Mold spores from the filter are almost certainly circulating through the ductwork and evaporator coil, which you cannot properly access or treat yourself. In Dubai's climate, simply cleaning the visible part rarely addresses the root moisture problem inside the AC unit. A proper inspection involves using borescopes to view internal components and, if necessary, air or swab sampling to identify the mold species and concentration, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. This is a case where a science-driven approach with verifiable before-and-after results is needed to ensure your indoor air is healthy. |
