Black and green mold behind wardrobe: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our wardrobe in the bedroom has started showing these awful black and green splotches, and the room just smells damp all the time. We only moved the furniture to rearrange after the recent humidity and were shocked by what we found. We’ve been in this Jumeirah Park villa for about five years and never had an issue before. What’s the most effective way to treat this ourselves, or is this a job where we absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company?

That's a classic and serious mold issue, common in Dubai villas. The damp smell confirms active growth, which is a health risk. For an area this extensive, hidden behind furniture for years, professional remediation is strongly advised.

Attempting DIY on this scale often fails. Wiping visible mold with bleach or vinegar only removes surface discoloration; the root moisture and deep-seated mold in the wall remain. You risk spreading spores throughout your home during cleaning, potentially causing new colonies in your AC system or other rooms.

The cause is likely a combination of Dubai's high humidity and a hidden moisture source. It could be condensation from a cold wall (common with year-round AC), a tiny plumbing leak inside the wall, or moisture ingress from the external villa wall. A proper inspection identifies and resolves this source first; otherwise, the mold will return quickly.

A certified mold remediation company will isolate the area, use HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, safely remove contaminated materials, and treat the area with professional-grade biocides. Crucially, they will use a moisture meter to find the water source. The final step should always be post-remediation verification (PRV) testing by an independent lab to confirm the spore count is back to safe, ambient levels before you repaint or move furniture back.

For a smaller, surface-level patch, DIY might suffice. But given the description—black and green splotches, a persistent damp smell, and a five-year growth period—this is a job for professionals to ensure your family's health and prevent structural damage to your villa.
