Black and green mold in bedroom: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our guest bedroom in Mirdif has been closed up for a while, and when I opened it yesterday I found a bunch of black and greenish spots spreading along the bottom of the wall near the window. The room feels really damp and smells like old earth. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies here?

That damp, earthy smell with visible black and green spots on the wall is a classic sign of active mould growth, and in Dubai's climate, it's a very common issue, especially in closed-up rooms. The high humidity and temperature fluctuations cause significant condensation, particularly on cooler exterior walls and around windows, creating the perfect environment for mould.
For a small patch (under one square foot/30cm²), a DIY approach can be attempted. A solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould cleaner is more effective and safer than bleach, which often only removes the surface colour and can worsen indoor air quality. Scrub the area thoroughly, ensuring you wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles to avoid inhaling spores or getting them on your skin. However, the critical step is addressing the moisture source. You must identify why that wall is damp—it could be condensation from the AC, a tiny leak in the window seal, or even rising damp. If the growth is widespread (covering over a square meter), has penetrated deeply into the drywall or behind skirting boards, or if the musty odour persists after cleaning, this is not a DIY job. Disturbing large colonies releases a massive amount of spores throughout your home. In these cases, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. Certified remediators will contain the area, use HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, safely remove contaminated materials, and most importantly, use moisture meters to pinpoint and help you resolve the underlying water issue to prevent it from returning. |
