Black and green mold in shower: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a bunch of black and greenish mold spreading along the grout in the master shower and starting to creep up the wall. It's definitely gotten worse since the weather got more humid. I'm worried about it affecting our health and damaging the tiles, but I have no idea what this kind of cleanup would cost. Should I try to tackle this myself with bleach, or is this a job where I absolutely need to call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Small areas of surface mold on shower grout can often be managed with DIY cleaning. For a two-year-old buildup in Dubai's humidity, start by scrubbing with a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Bleach can lighten the color but doesn't kill the root structure beneath the surface, so regrowth is common.
If the mold has penetrated the grout or is creeping up the wall, the moisture source is likely behind the tiles. This is a common issue here due to condensation from AC use and high ambient humidity. In these cases, scrubbing the surface is a temporary fix. A professional assessment is needed to identify if there's a leak, insufficient sealing, or moisture trapped in the wall cavity, which can lead to structural damage over time. For health concerns, particularly with black mold, or if the area is larger than a square foot, a lab test can identify the species and confirm the risk level. Remediation costs vary significantly based on the extent of the damage; it is far more economical to address a hidden moisture issue now than to replace tiles and drywall later. Request a detailed assessment from a company that provides diagnostic testing to understand the true scope and get an accurate remediation plan. |
