Black and green mold on wall: DIY or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
The wall behind our sofa in the living room has these black and green speckles that we never noticed before. We live in JVC and I think it must have started after that really humid spell we had a couple of weeks ago. The room has started to smell a bit damp, and my husband's allergies have been acting up ever since. What's the most effective way to clean this ourselves, or should I just call a professional company straight away?

Visible mold with a musty smell and allergy symptoms means this needs immediate attention. Given Dubai's high humidity and the fact it's on a wall (suggesting possible internal moisture), this likely requires professional assessment.
For small surface mold (less than 1 square meter), you can clean it with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a specialist mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, DIY cleaning often fails because it only addresses the surface. The mold's root system can remain inside the wall, especially if the issue stems from internal condensation or a hidden leak, which is common with our year-round AC use creating temperature differentials. The combination of black and green speckles, its sudden appearance after a humid period, the damp smell, and the allergic reaction strongly suggests a deeper moisture problem. In JVC, this is frequently due to condensation forming within the wall cavity from the contrast between the hot, humid outdoor air and the cooled interior. A professional inspection will identify the true moisture source using tools like thermal imaging and moisture meters. They can then determine if the drywall itself is compromised and needs replacement. The remediation process should always conclude with post-clearance testing to verify the spore count has returned to acceptable indoor levels, which is a standard best practice here. For a case with these symptoms, calling a pro is the most effective long-term solution. |
