Black bathroom grout and damp smell: DIY clean or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our Jumeirah apartment's master bathroom has started turning black, and there's a constant damp smell even though we run the exhaust fan. I think it’s mold, especially after the humidity we had last week. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself, or should I just call the building maintenance immediately?

That black grout is almost certainly mold, a common issue in Dubai bathrooms due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The damp smell confirms an ongoing moisture problem that the exhaust fan alone isn't resolving.

For a small, surface-level area, a DIY clean is possible. Wear gloves and a mask. Scrub the grout with a stiff brush and a paste of baking soda and water, or a dedicated grout cleaner. Follow with a spray of diluted white vinegar (let it sit for 10 minutes), then rinse thoroughly. The key is to dry the area completely with a fan or dehumidifier afterward to prevent immediate regrowth.

However, the persistent damp smell suggests the moisture issue may be deeper. Mold can grow behind tiles or in the wall if there's a hidden leak from plumbing or a failed sealant. In such cases, surface cleaning is a temporary fix.

You should consider calling building maintenance if the area is larger than a square foot, if the discoloration returns quickly after cleaning, or if you suspect a leak. Dubai Municipality's Public Health & Safety Department mandates that buildings maintain a healthy environment, and addressing structural moisture sources is the landlord's responsibility. For a definitive diagnosis, a professional inspection can identify the mold species and moisture source, which is critical for a permanent solution.
