Black bathroom grout and smell: urgent professional help needed?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom’s grout has started turning black in the corners near the shower, and there’s a really damp, earthy smell that hits me every time I walk in. It's been slowly getting worse over the last couple of months since the weather got more humid. I live in a villa in Jumeirah, and this is the main bathroom the whole family uses. Given the humidity here, is this something I need to get a professional to handle urgently this week, or can I tackle it myself with a good cleaner?

Black grout in a humid bathroom is almost certainly mould growth, a common issue in Dubai due to high ambient humidity and condensation from temperature changes. The accompanying earthy smell indicates active microbial growth, which can irritate allergies and asthma.

For a small, surface-level area, you can attempt cleaning with a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Scrub thoroughly and ensure the area is completely dry afterward. However, if the discolouration is widespread, has penetrated deep into the grout, or returns quickly after cleaning, the moisture source is likely behind the tiles. In villas, this can sometimes indicate a more significant condensation issue within the wall or a minor leak.

Given the persistent smell and gradual worsening, a professional inspection is advised. They can use moisture meters to check for hidden dampness and, if necessary, take samples for lab analysis to identify the mould species. This determines the correct remediation approach, as simply bleaching the surface often fails to address the root cause. Improving ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan for longer periods after showers can help reduce future growth.
