Black bathroom grout in Mirdif: DIY or urgent professional needed?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed that the grout between the floor tiles in our master bathroom in Mirdif has started turning black. It’s spreading from the corner near the shower and has a really damp, earthy smell that’s getting stronger. My main worry is whether this is something I need to get a professional to handle immediately this week, or if it’s okay to tackle myself over the weekend?

Black grout in a Mirdif bathroom is almost certainly mold, made worse by Dubai's high humidity and the constant condensation cycle from hot showers and air conditioning. The damp, earthy smell confirms active growth.

For a small, surface-level patch (a few tiles), a thorough DIY cleaning can be effective. Use a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Scrub vigorously, dry the area completely with a fan, and reseal the grout to prevent rapid regrowth.

However, since you describe it as spreading from the corner and the odor is strengthening, this suggests moisture is trapped behind the tiles or in the substrate. This is beyond a surface issue. Attempting to clean it yourself will likely only remove the visible growth while the colony continues to thrive unseen, potentially compromising the wall structure.

In this case, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of the damage behind the tiles. Remediation often involves removing the affected grout, treating the underlying area with antimicrobial solutions, and ensuring the space is properly dried before re-grouting and sealing. For a definitive identification of the mold type, a sample can be sent to a microbiology lab for analysis. Addressing the root moisture problem, such as checking for sealant failures or inadequate bathroom ventilation, is the only permanent solution.
