Black bathroom mold: DIY with bleach or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bathroom, right where the wall meets the ceiling. The room doesn't have a window and the exhaust fan is pretty weak, so I guess the humidity from our showers is the cause. I'm worried about my family's health and trying to figure out if this is something I can handle myself with bleach from ACE or if I absolutely need to call one of those mold removal companies in Dubai. What’s the typical cost range for a professional to treat something like this in a villa?

Black mould in a humid bathroom without proper ventilation is extremely common in Dubai. While small surface spots can sometimes be handled with care, widespread growth at the ceiling-wall joint suggests a deeper moisture issue that bleach cannot fix.

For a surface-level attempt, a solution of 70% water and 30% white vinegar is more effective than bleach at penetrating porous surfaces to kill the mould. Bleach only removes the surface colour. However, this is a temporary fix if the underlying cause—excess humidity and condensation—isn't addressed. You must improve ventilation by running the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider installing a more powerful unit.

Given the location (ceiling-wall joint) and the fact it's spreading, the mould may have penetrated behind the paint or into the ceiling material itself. In this climate, hidden mould can rapidly colonize the interstitial spaces where DIY methods are useless. A professional inspection with a borescope can assess the extent of the damage behind the surface.

For a villa bathroom, professional remediation typically involves isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials like drywall, HEPA vacuuming, and applying antimicrobial solutions. The cost is not for the cleaning product itself, but for the containment, proper disposal, and guarantee that the root cause is identified and resolved. Reputable companies provide before-and-after lab testing to verify the space is safe, which is the only way to have true peace of mind for your family's health.
