Black carpet mold in humid villa: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots growing along the edge of the carpet in our master bedroom. We have a ground-floor villa in Al Barsha and it feels more humid there than the rest of the house. I'm worried it's from when we ran the AC less during the cooler winter months. What's the most effective way to deal with this ourselves, or should I call a professional company straight away?

Based on your description of a ground-floor villa in Al Barsha with persistent humidity and visible black spots along the carpet edge, this is a classic case of localized mold growth, likely exacerbated by the Dubai climate. The high ambient humidity, combined with potential condensation from AC ductwork or a slight slab leak common in villas, creates an ideal environment for mold, especially during winter months when AC systems, which act as dehumidifiers, are run less frequently.
For a small, localized area (less than one square meter), a cautious DIY approach may be possible. You must wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. The carpet edge must be lifted to inspect the underside and the tack strip; this is often where the most concentrated growth occurs. The mold should be gently scrubbed with a solution of detergent and warm water, then wiped with a diluted disinfectant. A HEPA vacuum is essential for spore capture. However, this only addresses visible growth, not the underlying moisture source or airborne contamination. Given the location (a bedroom), the material (porous carpet and padding), and the chronic humidity issue, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. DIY efforts often disturb spores, spreading the contamination to other areas. In the UAE, proper remediation follows IICRC S520 standards and requires industrial-grade HEPA air scrubbers to contain and remove spores, antimicrobial applications, and, most critically, identification and resolution of the moisture source.
