Black carpet mold near wall: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots forming along the edge of the bedroom carpet, right against the wall. It's on the side that faces the outer wall of our apartment. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it came back after a few days. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaning solution, or is it time to call a professional?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth instigated by the specific climate conditions in Dubai. The location—along the edge of an exterior wall—strongly suggests a condensation issue. Exterior walls in apartments are often the coldest surfaces, especially when year-round air conditioning runs. When the humid outdoor air meets this cooled surface, condensation forms, providing the perfect, constant moisture source for mold to colonize the organic materials in your carpet and underlying padding.
Vinegar is a mild fungistatic agent but is not a professional-grade biocide. Its failure to resolve the issue confirms the moisture source is still active. Using a stronger, unregulated chemical cleaner is not advised. It may temporarily bleach the mold, making it invisible, but will not address the root cause. More critically, aggressive DIY scrubbing can inadvertently aerosolize a high concentration of mold spores, significantly worsening the indoor air quality and potential health risks. According to UAE guidelines, such as the Dubai Municipality's Public Health & Safety regulations, addressing the source of dampness is mandatory. A professional inspection is crucial here. We would use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact temperature differential and moisture meters to quantify the water content within the wall and carpet pad. The remediation process is technical: it involves isolating the area with containment barriers, using HEPA-filtered air scrubbers to clean the air, and then properly disposing of the contaminated carpet section and possibly affected wall materials. For a definitive diagnosis and a safe, compliant solution, I strongly recommend you call our team for an inspection.
