Black closet mold: DIY with bleach or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the inside wall has developed these black, speckled patches that smell really damp. We’ve lived in this Marina apartment for two years and it's just gotten worse since the humidity spiked. I wiped it with vinegar but it came back in a few days. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach or should I be calling a professional cleaning company?

Based on your description, you are dealing with a classic case of surface and likely systemic mold growth, exacerbated by the high ambient humidity and condensation issues prevalent in Dubai Marina apartments. The fact that it returned after a vinegar wipe confirms the growth is active and the underlying moisture source has not been addressed.

Using bleach is strongly discouraged. While it may appear to remove the surface discoloration, bleach is primarily water (over 90%) and can actually feed the mold roots (hyphae) deeper within the drywall or behind it. Furthermore, its chemical composition is ineffective on porous surfaces and the chlorine off-gassing creates dangerous indoor air pollutants, especially in a confined space like a closet.

The recurrence points to a persistent moisture issue. In our climate, with year-round AC use creating significant temperature differentials, the most probable cause is condensation forming on the cold interior wall. This wall likely contains a chilled water AC pipe or is an improperly insulated external wall. The damp smell indicates potential water intrusion or a more severe condensation problem within the wall cavity, which you cannot see.

For these reasons, a professional inspection is not just recommended, it is essential. DIY methods will only provide a temporary cosmetic fix and allow the problem to worsen, potentially compromising the structural integrity of the drywall and impacting your indoor air quality. UAE regulations, particularly in community governed areas like Marina, often require remediation to be handled by certified professionals to prevent cross-contamination and ensure proper disposal.

Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact moisture source and borescopes to inspect inside walls. This diagnostic step is critical. We then provide a detailed protocol for safe, contained remediation and addressing the root cause, such as improving insulation or ventilation.
