Black closet specks: mold needing professional help?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to get these black specks on some of our shoes and bags. I first spotted it about two weeks ago, and it seems to be slowly getting worse, especially after we run the AC all day. I'm worried it's spreading but I don't know if it's something I can clean with vinegar or if I need to call one of those mold remediation companies in Dubai. How can I tell if this is a serious mold problem that needs professional help?

Black specks appearing on leather goods in a closet on an outside wall, especially after AC use, strongly suggest a condensation-related mold issue common in Dubai. The AC cools the interior wall surface, while the outside heat and humidity create a "cold bridge" where moisture condenses, providing the dampness mold needs to grow on dust and organic materials like leather.
This is likely a surface mold, but the root cause is the hidden moisture. Wiping the items with a dilute vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) can remove the visible growth. However, this is only a temporary fix if the condensation problem isn't addressed. For a closet on an outside wall, the severity depends on the extent of the hidden moisture within the wall cavity. If the specks return quickly after cleaning, if you detect a musty odor, or if the drywall feels soft or damp, the issue is likely more serious. In Dubai's climate, persistent dampness can lead to structural damage over time. A professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source and penetration level. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to see inside the walls without damage. Verifiable evidence from these tools, not just a visual check, determines if remediation is needed. For a small, contained area, remediation may be straightforward, but if the wall insulation is wet, professional drying and treatment are necessary to prevent recurrence and protect your belongings and property structure. |
