Black dust from AC vent: clean myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell, and I just found patches of black dust around the vent in my master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years in Jumeirah Village Circle and never had this issue until the humidity really spiked last month. Is this something I can clean myself with a bleach solution, or do I need to call a professional AC cleaning service?

That black dust around your vent is a common sign of mould growth within your AC system, and the damp smell confirms it. In Dubai's high humidity, especially during recent months, condensation inside AC units creates an ideal environment for mould.
While a small amount on the visible vent cover can be wiped with a diluted bleach solution, the problem is almost certainly inside the ductwork or on the cooling coils, which you cannot safely or effectively reach yourself. DIY cleaning often just spreads spores further. For a recurring issue with visible dust and odour, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the extent of contamination inside the unit and ducts. A proper remediation involves containing the area, using HEPA vacuuming, and applying EPA-approved biocides to the entire system, not just the vent. Given that you're in an apartment, the responsibility might lie with you or the building management, depending on the unit type (centralised vs. split). A professional assessment can clarify this and provide documentation. They can also identify if the underlying cause is a clogged drain line or insufficient insulation, which are frequent issues in villas and apartments here. Addressing the root cause is the only way to prevent it from returning after cleaning. |
