Black fuzzy mold in closet: DIY fix or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet on the inside wall has developed these black fuzzy patches, and it's been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. I tried wiping it down with vinegar, but it came back even darker. I'm worried it's spreading behind the clothes and I'm not sure if this is a simple fix or if I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies here in Dubai. What's the best way to handle this myself, or is this a sign I definitely need professional help?

The black fuzzy patches are likely Stachybotrys or another toxigenic species, which is a serious concern. Your vinegar attempt failed because it only bleaches surface growth without addressing the deep-rooted mycelium or the moisture source—a common issue in Dubai's high humidity.

For a closet on an interior wall, the cause is almost certainly condensation from the temperature differential between your air-conditioned room and the humid void behind the wall. This requires more than surface cleaning. You must identify and stop the moisture intrusion first.

Since the mold returned darker and you suspect hidden growth, this is beyond a simple DIY fix. Disturbing it further without proper containment risks spreading spores throughout your bedroom. Professional assessment is strongly advised. A reputable inspector will use a borescope to check inside the wall cavity and recommend a targeted remediation plan that includes isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials like drywall, and applying specialized antimicrobial treatments.

For any remediation in Dubai, ensure the company follows international IICRC S520 standards and provides before-and-after lab reports to verify the spore count has been returned to safe levels. This is the only way to be certain the problem is resolved.
